The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum offers programming year round for people of all ages. Unlike most museums, it's not open on Sundays. With all that history floating around, it was only natural to build a museum to honor and preserve the maritime culture of the Outer Banks. It is part of the North Carolina Maritime Museum System within the State History Museums, Division of Archives and History, Department of Cultural Resources. The museum also introduces a new exhibit annually. Alexander Hamilton coined the nickname that has stayed with the seas of North Carolina for over 200 years: Graveyard of the Atlantic.In 1773, a 15 year-old Hamilton was caught off Cape Hatteras in a furious storm which nearly sent his ship to the bottom of the Atlantic.
